When Jayla had envisioned herself studying abroad in Athens, she saw herself climbing up to the Acropolis and taking trips to different countries. She did not see herself teaching English every Wednesday for two hours to a Sudanese journalist who had written something seen as unfavorable within the country and was consequently expelled.
Last Sunday my friend Xanthippi invited me over to spend the afternoon cooking with some other friends, the perfect introduction to Greek living. Just getting to her house required a long trip to the suburbs which revealed what daily life outside of the city center is like: here, happily, a pedestrian can walk without fear of being hit.
Maggie and Leilah have been volunteering at local refugee camp for several weeks now. For Leilah it’s even the reason she chose to study abroad in Greece,
“I basically study the refugee crisis at school so that pretty much determined where I should go.”
And for Maggie it’s a chance to give back and meet some refugees.
Chris is a waiter at Ρακομπακαλικο. He has bright eyes, an infectious smile, and could talk for days. Those were just some of the things I learned in the first 30 seconds of meeting him.
