When Robert Leary came to Pangrati and stepped into the College Year in Athens building, it was a homecoming of sorts. A former student of the CYA Union College faculty-led program in 1982 while studying politics at Union College, he is now back in Athens for a different reason: as the new CEO of The Olayan Group, a global conglomerate of investment and operating companies based in Athens, London, New York and Riyadh. It can be said that a lot has changed since 1982. Mr. Leary is now connected to CYA not as a student, but as a former trustee and alumnus, he has added a political science degree and a law degree to his name, and has broadened his scope past politics through working extensively in law and the financial sector.
Seven years ago Deacon Bartholomew (Michael) Mercado was in the middle of completing his BA in Religious Studies at Hellenic College of the Holy Cross (HCHC). During this time, he spent the fall semester of 2010 abroad in Greece at CYA. Something which turned out to be one of the most profound experiences of his life.
Three years on, CYA Alumna Maggie Chutter (fall ’14) returned to Greece to work on a unique and interesting volunteering project with the cat charity 9 lives Greece. Read as she shares the story of her interesting journey with us!
After a comprehensive search, The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) has chosen Jennifer Sacher (CYA 99′) to be the next editor of Hesperia, the School’s quarterly periodical.
Sister Theoterpi née Christina McFall was a student at CYA in the fall semester of 2006. During this time, in an attempt to enrich her knowledge about her studies, concerning philosophy, Ancient Greek and environmental protection, she discovered the Holy Monastery of St. John. Read as she shares her remarkable life-changing CYA story with us.
