One experiences the ephemeral realities around them, so vastly different from their home environments, and they wish to capture these rarities so as to keep them forever. Yet, they are fleeting moments, and cannot be contained for more than the present in which they are experienced.

What does it mean for an experience to be authentic?
When we travel to other countries, we tend to enter our foreign endeavors with romanticized ideas of the ‘authentic study-abroad experience.’ We all have preconceived notions of what the major idealized European cities should be like: Paris is the city of love; Vienna is the hub of art and elegance; Rome is the center of great architecture and Athens the birthplace of democracy and the scene of antiquity. But what does it mean to experience one of these European cultural centers authentically?

A CYA orientation like no other…
At CYA it is our mission to not only educate students about Greece but the world as a whole. We teach our students how to learn and how to approach and discover a site, as well as the dedication needed to progress and succeed in life, both academically and personally. In line with this mission, the first ever CYA Orientation field trip transported students to the center of the world, Delphi. The ideal starting point to start their study abroad journey and to feel inspired to branch out and discover the rest of the world.

May 2 – May 3 all-day

“Concepts of Urban Design and Public Space in Greece Throughout the Ages” CYA announces its 2nd Student Conference in Athens on May 2 and 3, 2018. We invite submissions from undergraduate students of CYA, U.S. institutions, and Universities in Greece. The conference is designed to suit a broad based and multi-disciplinary discussion on varying aspects of both urban planning and utilization of public space in major urban centers in Greece from antiquity down to the modern age. Its primary aim is to provide fresh insight on the main human or material factors (including political, social, economic, religious and cultural ones) that determined the layout, change, development and evolution of public space within designated and specific civilian settlements; in addition, major emphasis will be placed on how these urban centers are being experienced by their inhabitants at the time, along with the usual tensions and challenges that manifest themselves during times of transition and change. Students with a background across the multi-disciplinary board, from art and architecture, history and archaeology, to urban design and social sciences are more than welcomed to present. Please submit abstracts of no more than 500 words -accompanied by a brief bio- by Friday 16 February, 2018. Applicants will be notified by Monday 12 March 2018. Submissions should be emailed to: tscourta@dikemes.edu.gr CONFERENCE COMMITTEE: JOHN KARAVAS, CHAIR, CYA ANCIENT HISTORY PROFESSOR THEONI SCOURTA, CYA VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS MARIA VIDALI, CYA CONTEMPORARY URBANISM PROFESSOR
