|CYA Term:||Fall 2016|
Based on your experience with CYA, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester or summer abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I learned a lot about my interests and passions abroad. Before leaving, I bought a camera and began a blog, which turned out to really point me in the right direction. I got an internship with a local magazine in Athens and found that I really enjoy photojournalism. Upon returning from Greece, I was able to take those valuable experiences and new insights and better spend my time at school (working towards what I enjoy).
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
What do you wish you knew before starting your study abroad experience?
Buy a camera, take lots of pictures, pack light, book plane tickets early, embrace discomfort, ride public transportation wherever you travel, go on at least one CYA field trip, make the most of your time and opportunities abroad.
What are you willing to share about your CYA experience with other students?
Students can email me about:

Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.
Once when I was grocery shopping, I lightly bumped into a yaya with my backpack. As I turned around to apologize, this yaya proceeded to chew me out in front of the whole store. I was shocked. I wanted to respond, but my Greek was very minimal at this point so I just walked away. She continued to yell at me. I will never forget the look of utter disgust and astonishment on this yaya's face. Little moments like this are what I remember most vividly from my time abroad. While they were not particularly glamorous in the moment, they are marked by an authentic cultural encounter. Don't pass up the little moments in Greece and give special attention to the crazy yayas you come across.
