On February 13, 2020, CYA honored the memory of Ismene Phylactopoulou, its founder, at its annual Founder’s Day event. Ismene’s resilient and innovative spirit enabled her to achieve her goals, making her an “example of female emancipation and a role model for young women,” as President Phylactopoulos stated in his speech. At the event, memories of Ismene and CYA’s past were shared among faculty, staff, and alumni.
Last week, College Year in Athens (CYA) had the honor of being welcomed to the Consulate General of Greece in Boston by Consul General Stratos Efthymiou. Consul Efthymiou noted CYA’s important history of inspiring students and philhellenes to come to Greece for academic purposes, enriching the country’s academic and cultural landscape.
CYA alumni from 1988-89 and their guests participated in a mini-reunion in late July. Participants were part of an effort to expand our Alumni Relations at CYA and to provide future opportunities for alumni to return to visit. With the help of Joe Garnjobst, Class Agent for the class of ’89, CYA piloted a program of bringing together alumni for a class reunion in Athens by opening this to a small group of alumni, a “test group,” with the hope that this event would spur other alumni to plan class reunion events in Athens as well. Participants were: Jim Rubenstein, Dave Morehouse, Su-Lin Jones, and Joe Garnjobst, all of whom had attended CYA for the full year.
It is hard to believe that I attended CYA for a semester abroad over 16 years ago. All of these years later, I still consider CYA one of my most cherished experiences as a college student and young adult—I made lifelong friendships, rediscovered my ancestral home, and gained a word-class education—in fact, a CYA classmate even attended my wedding last year!
