At CYA, our executive director of student affairs, Nadia Meliniotis, arranges volunteer, internship and childcare opportunities for student interested. Extracurricular activities range from teaching refugee children English to giving tour guides at a museum. This semester, one Spring ‘19 CYA student from the University of Southern California studying public health, spent time with Praksis Polyclinic learning, helping and engaging with refugees in need of free medical care. Read below the Q & A interview about this student’s experience.
Hidden among the beige apartment buildings of Fokianou Street lies FokiaNou Art Space. This unsuspecting gallery exists within the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building, and it is located only a block away from CYA’s Academic Center. As you travel the seven flights up to the gallery, you will be greeted by a decorative stairway, and when you reach the gallery, you will receive a friendly ‘hello’ from Mary Cox, the director of the space.
This semester, CYA Executive Director of Student Affairs, Nadia Meliniotis, secured me an internship at the gallery, where I help to prepare the space for opening and closing. This past week, Mary and I got together to talk in a bit more depth about the gallery’s history and her role as director.
Don’t you stop me. I am dreaming.
We lived centuries of injustice bent over.
Centuries of loneliness.
Now don’t. Don’t you stop me.
Now and here, for ever and everywhere.
I am dreaming freedom.
These lines were uncovered from a lost poem of Katerina Gogou written after the Greek military junta (1967-1974). The verse, like much of Gogou’s poetry, reveals her commitment to free will and the imagining of a post-dictatorial Greece.
Studying abroad in Greece provides students a plethora of sites, views, and places to visit. CYA organizes three field trips a semester to different regions of Greece. However, there’s much more to see beyond those field trips. Previously, we compiled a list of must-see Greek islands, now we’ve asked CYA students, faculty and staff for their favorite places to visit in mainland Greece.
Women’s History Month is the time to recognize not only women who have already made history but also those who are impacting history right now. The lessons these women teach, the ways they are improving our world, and their continuing diligence are crucial for us to understand and take to heart. Greek scientist Eleni Antoniadou, whose contributions to regenerative medicine and bioastronautics have been so important, is one such woman.
Imagine being a beloved actress and artist, performing around the world and receiving awards and praise for your talents. Then, a military coup happens in your home country, and your people struggle under a brutal regime. You use your platform to speak out and to seek justice, but the government does not approve–they strip you of your citizenship, and you are unable to return home. However, you continue to fight for what you believe is right.
This was the life of Melina Mercouri.
