The Athens Philosophy Seminar (APS) is a course held every summer which aims introduce students to graduate level work and expose them to the latest research in philosophy. Each APS focuses on one philosophical topic and culminates into a week-long engagement with a distinguished philosopher, who will be presenting their latest research on the topic.
This year’s CYA Voula Field School excavation focused on the ruins of a large Agora, and its architectural remains at the site of Aixonidai Halai, one of the ten demes of Attica in the coastal suburb of Voula. CYA students helped uncover more information about the area, and presented the results of their findings at the Annual Voula Dig Conference, which took place at the CYA Academic Centre on the 27th of March, 2018.
Twenty-two CYA spring ’18 students with a keen interest in politics, globalization and world affairs had the unique opportunity to attend the Delphi Economic Forum. Now in its third year, it has been loosely described as Greece’s “mini Davos’.
My Greek teacher, Marinetta Papahimona, ever the inspirational woman that she is, keeps the faith. As we learn more Greek and start to turn on autopilot, droning on in our little dialogues about going to the beach on the weekend and ordering at a restaurant, we are more concentrated on the ink on the page than the substance of the conversation.
On the third floor of CYA, Tucked away in the library, is one of our best-kept secrets, Georgia Katsarou, our Academic Librarian. Since joining CYA in 2006, she has been the key person faculty and students go to for her expertise. Georgia is a goldmine of useful information regarding academic research and study. Born and raised in Athens, Georgia received her Bachelor’s Degree in Library Studies at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, and her Master’s in Information and Library Studies at the University of Aberystwyth. She lives in Athens with her husband and their two children Marina aged 7 and Nikolas aged 4. In her spare time Georgia enjoys fiction and reading stories aloud to her children, but her unique talent is to create beautifully intricate embroideries that bring to life the beauty of the things that inspire her.
